Denmark is a country that we visit regularly, not only because it’s the home country of my beloved Viking, but also because we simply love it. Not that Belgium is a bad or ugly country, but the Belgian coastline is short and filled with high apartment buildings and ugly hotels. For me, it’s exhilarating to be in a country with thousands of kilometers of rather unspoilt coastline.
During every trip, we try to discover new villages, harbors, and islands. During the Christmas vacation, The Viking’s sister suggested to us to go to Thurø. This is a very small island to the south of Funen, which is Denmark’s central island. In order to go to Thurø, you don’t need to take a boat: it’s connected to Funen with a bridge. You drive all the way to the south, to Svendborg, go straight to the harbor and follow the arrows to Thurø. The island has about 3500 inhabitants, gorgeous beaches and woods, several small harbors and a couple of camping sites.
In order to reach one of the public beaches, you first drive through a forest, which is often the case in Denmark. Although this was a new destination for us, we didn’t take any color pictures simply because we couldn’t…. The weather was grey and I thought that color pictures would turn out dull. I think I made the wise decision to stick to black and white.
Thurø is a place that you won’t find in any travel guide. You can stick to the familiar places, like the beaches around Copenhagen, but they tend to be crowded or you can explore one of the many beautiful small bays and islands around Denmark. Enjoy tranquillity and admire the beautiful landscapes in Thurø!
