Featured writer: Ouch!! My back hurts!!
Seems we’re allowed one day of summer per month these days. Saturday was that day. No, wait… we’ve had one good one already, the day I walked stretch two… so, maybe we’re allowed 2 summer’s days per month… mmmm, I give up… you tell me.
Anyway… I was fortunate enough to be a at one of senior son’s cricket games in town on Saturday. Close enough to Sandymount Strand to dash off for a quick peep during the innings break.
The rewards were great… folk out in their numbers… photo opportunities galore. I’m amazed to see what people over here will get up to on the beach if they have even a sniff of goodish weather. Back in the old country, we the locals, would frown at the antics of the up-country bumpkins when we saw the carry-on they would get up to on days we’d avoid going near the beach. And so it is here… the temperature is barely into the high teens, Celsius, that is and the folk are frolicking…
Babies in mud pools… sorry, is that beach sand I see? OK… babies in pools, for the want of a better description. Babies on blankets… mammy’s and pappy’s trying desperately to get the mad wobbly castles to stay erect… frolicking, frolicking.
The pretty people parading along the promenade… lycra everywhere but where it belongs. Am I being super critical? Yes, I think I am. After all… folk are just trying to have the smidgen of fun this summer has afforded to date! Enjoy…
But after all is said and done… after the towers, the kites… the frolicking… the baby in the mud… my most favourite of them all… the old fella enjoying the scant warmth of the afternoon sunshine and adding colour to the scene…
