Best known for its famous Oktoberfest, Germany is a popular tourist destination. It’s home to some of Europe’s most beautiful scenery, fairy tale castles, historical sights, and lively night life. While we all know Berlin, Frankfurt, and Munich, there are several smaller German destinations well-worth a visit. Here’s an overview of 5 less popular cities worth visiting in Germany.
Garmisch Partenkirchen
With its unspoiled nature, vibrancy, and Bavarian charm, Garmisch Partenkirchen will overwhelm you with the mountains, rivers, and breathtaking panoramas. Walk along the streets and stroll down the alleyways; with every step, you’ll discover a little more of the variety the area has to offer or ride the meter-gauge rack railway, Zahnradbahn, that begins in Garmisch and delivers you to Mount Zugspitze. Above the clouds, you are standing on top of Mount Zugspitze at a height of nearly 3000 metres. The air is pure, the views seem endless, and the panorama is breathtaking. The only things around you are the blue sky, mighty summits, and powerful vastness. You are standing at the highest point of Germany!
Fussen
The city of Füssen is the southern-most end and climax of the famous German Romantic Road. Its location in the heart of one of Bavaria’s most charming hill and lake districts make it the ideal starting point for visits to Neuschwanstein Castle as well as Hohenschwangau Castle. The ship-roundtrips on Lake Forggensee offer fantastic views to Neuschwanstein and the surrounding Alpine mountain range. The central part of Füssen is a pedestrian area filled with historic merchants’ houses painted in pastel colours, baroque churches, and the “Hohe Schloss” (High Castle) with its inner courtyard and wonderful frescoes. Around the town is some of Bavaria’s most beautiful landscape framed by mountains and lakes and with a fabulous network of trails for cyclists, mountain bikers, and hikers.
Oberjoch
Friedrichshafen
Friedrichshafen’s fabulous location on the northern shores of Lake Constance offers a wonderful climate and idyllic surroundings with boundless opportunities in, on, or beside the water. The town is the home of the Zeppelin and a dream destination for technology and aviation enthusiasts. Located where southern Germany meets Switzerland and Austria, Friedrichshafen offers cozy stops in any of the numerous street-side cafés, unique panoramas of the lake and the Alps, leisurely strolls along the lakeside promenade, or regional specialties and local wines. Lake, sunshine, and mountains, Friedrichshafen is like a German dreamland.
Freiburg
Beautiful pictures!!! 🙂
Been German and living in the south west I can only agree that those are five cities well worth a visit – but then nearly every region is worth a visit…and is that not the same in every country?
